I bought this book yesterday in Waterstones'. It was in the clearance pile as someone had carelessly ripped the cover. It was £3.99 instead of £5.99, so I bought it!
After reading the prologue of this book, my first thoughts were "Oh no! Not another soppy animal book!" However, I decided to read it and see what it was like.
This book is about two tiger cubs who are taken from their natural habitat to Rome, where they are separated. One, the older, stronger one, is taken to the 'circus' (The gladiator arena. This book is set in Roman times) to fight. The younger weaker one is chosen to be a pet for Caesar's only daughter, Princess Aurelia.
I actually admire Aurelia because she thinks in a mature way, unlike her father and other ruthless Romans. She questions her teacher, asking them things like "Why do the animals in the arena die when they are innocent?" and "Why do some people live in really nasty conditions?" etc.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good semi-historical read. But beware, it's not for the weak hearted!
